So I may be slightly behind on this gorgeous trend which first hit fashion catwalks and high street's at the beginning of 2013, but the re-release of F. Scott. Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby, made a major imprint on the fashion world and sent fashion style's racing back to the roaring twenties. This decade combined with the 1950's is one of my favourite decades of all time, and whenever I'm aloud free reign on a project at uni, you can guarantee that they'll be some evidence of one of these decades within my work, so the reinvention of 1920's fashion over the past year or so has been amazing in my opinion!
The release of the Great Gatsby last spring, saw the re-invention of flapper style dresses, detailed head wear and everything that screamed the roaring 20's lifestyle. The Film's costume designer, Catherine Martin, went above and beyond, re-enacting every single movement of 1920's fashion through her costume designs and did it in such a way that nothing looked out of place; from Daisy Buchanan's beautifully detailed outfits to that famous pink suit of Gatsby's, I don't think anyone could falter any item of the wardrobe for this film.

Carrey Mulligan, played the role of Daisy Buchanan in the recent re-release of The Great Gatsby and poses here for a cover shoot in Vogue last spring. |

The infamous Pink Suit of Gatsby's worn exceptionally well by the one and only Leonardo DiCaprio I must point out. |
So how did Martin's overly luxurious costumes transfer into high street fashion styles and trends I hear you say? Well detailing and embellishment became a style must, the shift dresses which were ever so popular within the 20's were perfect for Spring/Summer collections and the trend itself was something so easy to mimic that to say it was impossible to attempt would be ridiculous. The character of Daisy's pastel colour pallet within her costumes in the film was reflected throughout Spring/Summer collections of both 2013 and this coming year, by high end designers such as Mulberry and Burberry, once again echoing the roaring 20's style in todays fashion.

Along with embroidered detailing, print's were something else which made a comeback, due to the release of The Great Gatsby or not, Prints were and still are a major style statement. |
 |
It wasn't just in women's fashion that the styling's of the Great Gatsby had an affect, menswear designers did too start making range's based on the infamous classic suits of Mr J Gatsby and his fellow gentleman. |
 |
Not only did the film have it's input in fashion and clothing design but it also had an input in jewellery design; do we need another excuse to want a Tiffany's bracelet? |
 |
Cara Delevingne sporting the lace and embellishment look on Mulberry's spring/summer 2014 collection catwalk; slight coincidence that it echo's some of the styling's from the Great Gatsby? I think not. |
People all around the world fell in love with not only the story that the great Gatsby tells, but their love for 1920's fashion all over again and with the film's input said to continue to influence collections over the next few months, this is a style that should definitely be on your must do list this year.
