Why is your favourite piece of clothing your favourite piece of clothing?
In preparation for my weekly Wednesday uni meet up with my group as part of my creative innovation and entrepreneurship project; The one thing collection, we were asked to prepare a PowerPoint talking about projects we'd been involved in, in the past in order to understand better what all of us, as individuals could bring to the team. Alongside this we were asked what our favourite garment was and to consider why. Now, as a fashion student for several years now, you can imagine my closet is brimming with all sorts of fashion must haves, but when it came to picking one soul item of clothing that was my favourite, I naturally struggled.
At first I thought about my denim skirt, it goes with EVERYTHING I thought, and can easily make that transition from day to night no questions asked, but it just felt like something normal to me, not something special? It was then that I started to question and ask myself, well what is your favourite piece of clothing suppose to feel like on, why is it your favourite piece of clothing?
I was pondering over this thought as I swung my grey faux fur coat over my shoulders and started to head out the door, I'd only had it a few months and had brought it specifically for my vacation to New York in November, it was then that I realised what your favourite piece of clothing was suppose to feel like, because mine was my grey faux fur coat. I felt special in it, I felt glamourous, I felt classy, I felt like everyone was looking at me, simply because I was wearing my grey faux fur coat (whether they actually were or not I have no idea) it made me feel like nothing was impossible and I could conquer the world if I were wearing that coat!
So to me your favourite piece of clothing isn't just a garment you buy because it's in fashion, or simply because you like it, its an item of clothing that you love and wear over and over again and makes you feel like, excuse the phrase, but a million dollars every time you get it out your wardrobe and wear it. Yes I might wear my denim skirt a lot, but it doesn't make me feel how my grey faux fur jacket does and that's what separates the two from being an item of clothing I like, to my favourite piece of clothing.
The next question I ask however, is will I still love my favourite item of clothing in a matter of years if not months time? if I don't was it really my favourite item of clothing? Do I have to have a favourite item of clothing? Right now, my favourite item of clothing isn't really that out of "trend", will this item of clothing change when it does? Has the Fashion Industry engraved this "fast fashion" frame of mind that deeply into us that we only love items of clothing because its on trend? or is that looking to far into it?
Let me know your thoughts, it'd be interesting for further study into both fast and slow fashion backgrounds within this group project to hear them.
